Cloudflare Hyperdrive

Edge connection pooler/proxy for databases. (Source note was a quick capture — verify details.)

Source note (raw/cloudflare/what is hyperdrive?.md):

  • A single query can take ~7 round trips without it.
  • With Hyperdrive, TCP, TLS, and DB auth happen in the worker (?) — uncertain; confirm.
  • Provides connection pooling.
  • Provides query caching.

Why it matters

Without pooling, every edge request opens a fresh DB connection (expensive TCP + TLS + auth handshake). Hyperdrive keeps a warm pool at the edge and caches repeated queries, slashing latency.

  • Owned by Databases (pooling + caching).
  • Also relevant to Networking (edge proxy, round-trip reduction).

Open questions

  • Exact architecture: where the pool lives, how caching keys / invalidates.
  • Supported DBs (Postgres, MySQL) and limits.
  • Relationship to psql basics / connection strings.
